Why did you choose to do an apprenticeship with AGP Decorators?

At college, I did a multi-skill construction course and found that I enjoyed painting and decorating the most, and decided that I would like to do it full-time.

Reflecting on your time at AGP (so far), how have you found the experience?

The experience has been really positive because I have had the opportunity to work on very different commercial and residential projects. I get to learn all aspects of the job and can use brilliant equipment such as electrical sanders. Also, I have worked away from home and across the country on retail shop and factory decorating projects, which have been a great experience. This has included working up outdoor scaffolds which is a part of the job that I really enjoy.

How do you hope your apprenticeship will support your future career?

My apprenticeship has helped me learn all aspects of painting and decorating and gain valuable skills which will help me become fully qualified. Once qualified, I will be able to undertake future projects on my own within the company, which is exciting.

Would you recommend an apprenticeship?

Yes, I would recommend an apprenticeship for any young person as it allows you to learn new skills and start earning your own money. At AGP, you get the opportunity to work with new people and communicate with different clients about their decorating needs which has been a really valuable experience.

When asked about their experience hiring Sam and harnessing apprenticeship schemes to grow talent and develop a skilled workforce, AGP Directors Paul and Sophie said;

“Sam joined the company as our first apprentice when he was 17. He was quite shy and fresh from school with little experience, but quickly showed a willingness to learn and adapt to new environments. Sam’s communication skills and confidence have grown significantly since he joined the business, often resulting in positive customer feedback. Sam is reliable, has a brilliant attendance record, is hardworking and understands our company vision, standards and values.

Although Sam is still within his learning phase, we’re proud of his progress and ambition to keep developing new skills. We’re looking forward to celebrating Sam completing his apprenticeship this summer and believe he will continue to flourish as he gets more responsibilities and the chance to run projects on his own.

We’d highly recommend apprenticeship schemes, it’s a great way to help get young people into the construction workforce and it’s really rewarding watching their journey.”
